Common Types of Tire Services for Your Vehicle — Silver Lake Auto & Tire

From the early days to now, the common thread is that taking care of your vehicle with regular maintenance is the best way to ensure it takes care of you for the long haul. In Wisconsin especially, it’s important to have the right tires for your vehicle. It’s also essential to enlist the expertise of a trusted tire expert when it’s time for tire repair and sales. Thousands of area drivers consistently choose Silver Lake Auto & Tire Centers for their tire-related needs, and we want to do the same thing for you.

Tire Repair

There is no underestimating the importance of tires. Not only do they provide traction and stability, but they also support your vehicle. Roads are riddled with debris, potholes, and other obstructions—leaving tires at the brunt of each encounter. It’s often a matter of “when,” and not “if” you’ll need tire repair due to the nature of their functionality, which is where we come in with tire repair and sales. If your car suffers a tire puncture, we will assess the situation to see if we are able to plug or patch the hole. Worn rubber, incorrect air inflation, and cracks or bulges in the sidewalls are common culprits for flat tire repair, which is why regular service is imperative. Unfortunately, not all tire damage is repairable, which is when you’ll need to start considering a new tire or set of tires.

Tire Sales

Several criteria impact the kind of tires your car needs: how much you drive, the kind of roads you drive on, and the environment and season. There are several tire types available to account for all tire needs. For example, snow tires possess a tread pattern specifically designed for snowy conditions, while performance tires channel your vehicle’s significant power and acceleration into agility and grip. We also carry all-season, summer, and extreme performance tires. The best way to know it’s time for tire repair and sales is with an inspection at our auto shop. You’ll be sure to leave with peace of mind with our great selection of Michelin and BFGoodrich tires. Our tire experts will measure your tread and check the overall condition to determine if your tires are still safe to drive on or if you need a fresh set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Minor tread-area punctures can be repaired. Per TIA guidance, repairable injuries are ≤ 1/4 in (6 mm) and only in the tread, not the shoulder or sidewall. Damage to the shoulder/sidewall or to the internal structure requires replacement for safety.

We demount the tire (no on-wheel fixes), locate the injury, inspect the inner liner and casing, measure the puncture size, and check tread depth and previous repairs. If it meets the USTMA criteria and there’s no hidden damage, it’s eligible for repair.

Professional repair is a combination patch-plug from the inside. The process is: demount → inspect → buff → fill the injury channel (plug) → apply inner-liner patch → cure/seal. External plugs alone don’t seal the inner liner or restore air retention and aren’t approved for permanent repair.

Driving underinflated—even briefly—can damage the sidewall/casing, making repair unsafe. If you catch a puncture, stop and have it inspected promptly; continuing to drive may force a replacement even if the hole was small.

Replace if the puncture is over 1/4 in (6 mm), in the shoulder/sidewall, within non-repairable zones near the edge of the tread, if there’s casing/liner damage, or if repairs overlap/are too close (repairs must be spaced per TIA; no stacked/adjacent repairs). Also replace when the tire is worn out or has been run flat long enough to overheat the sidewall. Notes: Some run-flat tires have brand-specific repairability limits; if repaired, the speed rating or performance may be affected—we’ll advise based on the manufacturer’s policy.
