Beginner’s Guide to Car Light Repair

Have you ever noticed your car lights flickering, dimming, or not turning on at all? It’s important to fix that so you can see clearly and stay safe. Here's a simple guide to help you with basic car light repairs!

Steps to Basic Car Light Repair

Always remember: Safety first! Make sure the car is off and keys are out of the ignition.

  1. Check the Problem: Is it just one light? Is it all of them? Knowing the problem can help you figure out the solution.
  2. Replacing Bulbs:
  3. Find the Bulb: Open your car’s hood or trunk and find the back of the light you want to fix.
  4. Remove Old Bulb: Twist the bulb holder (it's like a socket), pull it out, and take out the old bulb.
  5. Put in New Bulb: Using gloves (to avoid oil from your hands getting on the bulb), put the new bulb in.
  6. Test It: Turn on your car and check if the light works.
  7. Checking Fuses:
  8. Find the Fuse Box: It's usually inside the car or under the hood. Your car’s manual will show you where.
  9. Look for a Blown Fuse: A good fuse looks clean and clear. A bad one might be broken or black inside.
  10. Replace the Fuse: Using fuse pullers or tweezers, remove the bad fuse and put in a new one of the same type.
  11. Examine Wires: If you’ve replaced bulbs and fuses and lights still don't work, the wires might be the issue. Check for loose or broken wires near the light. If you see any problems, it’s best to let one of our ASE Certified Technicians.

Getting the Right Bulb

There are many types of bulbs, so how do you pick?

  • Check the Manual: Your car’s manual will tell you the right bulb type.
  • Take the Old Bulb to the Store: You can match it to ensure you get the same kind.

Why It's Important to Fix Car Lights

  1. Safety: Good lights ensure you see the road and other drivers see you.
  2. Avoid Tickets: Driving with broken lights can get you in trouble with the police.
  3. Car Looks Better: Bright and working lights make your car look fresh and cared for.
