Responsible for changing gears and controlling the RPMs of your vehicle, it’s the reason why you’re able to put your car in “Park” and “Drive.” It does this by utilizing a system of complex parts and precise timing, and it should come as no surprise that it needs consistent maintenance to perform at its best. That’s where we can help.
At Silver Lakes Auto & Tire in North Lake, Wisconsin, our ASE Certified technicians utilize the latest tools and service techniques to perform every service your transmission may need. You need the best automotive professionals working on your vehicle. When you visit our shop, know that your vehicle’s transmission system is in good hands.
How to Take Better Care
Your vehicle’s transmission is a complex system that relies on a variety of components and precise timing in order to properly function. It should come as no surprise that to maintain that level of performance, you must properly maintain the transmission. Although we recommend leaving all services to our ASE Certified technicians, there are some things you can do to monitor and maintain the system’s condition. Here are two things our automotive team suggests so you can get the most out of your vehicle’s transmission!
Check the Fluid
The transmission fluid helps lubricate the parts found within your transmission and keeps the system clean. Without fresh, clean fluid, your transmission cannot perform at its best. To inspect it, use the dipstick found next to the system. Once you’ve cleaned the dipstick, insert it back into the system and take it out. You want to take note of the level and quality of the fluid. Unlike motor oil, the fluid is never consumed or burned up. If you notice the fluid level is low, that is a certain sign of a leak and you’ll need to visit our shop as soon as possible. As for the quality of the fluid, it should have a bright red appearance and sweet smell to it. If it starts to look brown and smell burnt, that means the fluid needs to be changed or flushed!
Build Better Habits
How you drive can either help or hurt your transmission system. Bad habits can speed up the degradation of your transmission and have you visiting our shop a lot sooner than you’d like or expect. When driving, think about implementing these two habits into your driving style -- wait till the car is at a full stop to change gears and warm up your car before a drive. Although it may be difficult to adapt at first, these habits will help you save money and maintain your vehicle’s high level of performance!
