The check engine light is one of the most stress-inducing warning signals that your vehicle comes equipped with. It’s not because it informs you that there is a problem or of its severity. No, what leaves drivers frustrated and stressed is due to the lack of clarity it provides. Unless you own a specific tool to read your vehicle’s computer system, you won’t be able to understand what’s wrong with your vehicle. Fortunately for you, that’s where the Silver Lakes Auto & Tire Center can help. Our ASE Certified technicians not only have the diagnostic equipment and service tools available, but they also have the technical expertise to ensure that this pesky warning signal fully disappears. Whether it’s a dead battery or a bad O2 sensor, know we’ll handle any problem that will have caused this warning signal to go off.
Although the check engine light is helpful in that it informs you something is wrong, its inability to provide you with the specific problem can be maddening. With that said, there are a few things you can do to get rid of the light or at least determine the problem. Although we recommend that all repairs should be handled by our automotive team, understanding the cause of the light can help with the quality of your auto care experience. Here’s what we recommend!
Believe it or not, this is a legitimate cause for the dreaded check engine light to go off. When you see the warning signal, make sure you either tighten or replace your gas cap as this could be the cause. Also, give your vehicle some time to recognize the adjustment. You may need to drive a few miles before the computer system recognizes what you’ve done!
For any other problem that comes up, the OBD II scanner tool will be the second best option for determining the problem, outside of visiting our shop! This tool, which can be found at most auto parts stores for a modest sum, will translate the codes sent to the computer system from the sensors found throughout your vehicle. Please keep in mind that although some tools will give you the ability to erase the codes, it does not mean the problem is fixed! You will still need a repair even though your check engine light is no longer illuminated.
